Commenting on the changes to the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill, Matt Wrack, Acting General Secretary of NASUWT – The Teachers’ Union, said:
“The government has rightly been put under pressure by trade unions and campaigners to ensure that disabled people feel safe and supported.
“While concessions to the bill have been made, they do not go far enough. We now face an unethical two-tier system which discriminates on the basis of age.
“The entire proposal should be withdrawn and discussions on improving the working lives of disabled people should begin again, with disabled people and trade unions at the centre of those conversations.
“Disabled teachers know all too well that these benefits are essential for accessing employment, care, and going about daily life. We must have a system that works for everyone: a system that puts equality before cost.”
