Following the events in Northern Ireland and elsewhere in recent days, NASUWT stands in solidarity with our members, their pupils, families and communities.
We condemn the racist violence, intimidation and disorder that has taken place. There can be no justification for attacks on individuals, families, homes or communities, nor for the targeting of people because of their race, ethnicity, nationality, religion or immigration status.
Teachers and school leaders work every day to create safe, inclusive and welcoming environments where all children can learn and thrive. The values of respect, equality and inclusion that underpin education stand in direct opposition to hatred, racism and division.
We recognise that these events will have caused fear and anxiety for many members, particularly those from migrant communities and those who have experienced discrimination and prejudice. To those members, we send a clear message: you are not alone and your union stands with you.
Schools and colleges are places where young people learn not only academic knowledge, but also the importance of respect, tolerance and understanding. At a time when some seek to divide communities, we must reaffirm our commitment to those values.
NASUWT has a long-standing commitment to challenging racism, discrimination and extremism in all its forms. We call on political leaders, public authorities and community leaders to be unequivocal in condemning racism and violence wherever it occurs and to work together to promote community cohesion and understanding.
We encourage all members to continue supporting colleagues, pupils and families affected by these events and to challenge racism and prejudice whenever and wherever they encounter it.
There is strength in solidarity. Together, we will continue to stand for equality, inclusion and the right of every child and every member of staff to live, learn and work free from fear, hatred and discrimination.
