Call on your MP to support our Asbestos Removal Campaign

NASUWT is asking you to join our longstanding campaign to secure the removal of deadly asbestos from schools and colleges.

By contacting your MP, you can add your voice to our call for the recommendations of the previous Work and Pensions Select Committee (pdf) to be implemented by:

  • introducing a 40-year deadline for the removal of asbestos from public buildings; and

  • the creation of a central register for all asbestos.

Currently, the law allows asbestos to be indefinitely managed in situ, meaning that you and your pupils could be exposed to this material while deaths due to asbestos exposure continue to rise.

Asbestos can be disturbed by everyday activities, as well as by maintenance and renovation activities. Four out of five schools contain asbestos materials and the number of education workers being diagnosed with asbestos-related cancer is a rising.

Deaths of school staff have been increasing steeply since records began in 1980. Between 1980 and 2021, 431 teachers aged under 75 died in Britain from mesothelioma.

The measures we have been calling for will protect you, your colleagues and your pupils from these dangers and finally bring the scourge of asbestos in schools to an end.
