Teachers join the NASUWT primarily for help and support at work, but did you know your membership can also protect and assist you away from the classroom?
Legal cover for personal injuries away from work is just one of the benefits of NASUWT membership. It’s a protection that Michael Scanlon (pictured above), an NASUWT member from Hampshire was able to rely on following a serious road traffic collision in February 2024.
Michael was cycling to work when he was struck by a car emerging from a side road, resulting in multiple injuries including a fractured shoulder, a neck injury, broken ribs, and a bruised liver. Michael required surgery and the accident also had a lasting psychological impact. It also disrupted his active lifestyle, preventing him from participating in triathlons, golf, and commuting by bike.
Mr Scanlon instructed Thompsons Solicitors through the NASUWT personal injury scheme. Liability was swiftly admitted and following negotiations the case settled for just over £49,000, reflecting the pain, suffering, and financial losses incurred by Michael. Additionally, the defendant’s insurer reimbursed Mr Scanlon’s employer for sick pay paid during his recovery.
Following the settlement, Mr Scanlon praised the importance of the legal protection offered through NASUWT membership, saying:
“This case highlights the value of the legal support available to NASUWT members. The fact that members keep 100% of their compensation, with no deductions for legal fees, is a testament to the strength of the union’s legal service.”
We work with our legal partners Thompsons Solicitors to support members with expert legal representation.
NASUWT membership gives you access to a comprehensive package of legal support covering injuries both in and away from the workplace, industrial illnesses, medical negligence, will making, conveyancing, probate and power of attorney. Family members can also access some of these services on special terms.
