April update
The government’s white paper, ‘Every child achieving and thriving’, in combination with the changes to Ofsted and the consultation on SEND reform, will lead to significant change for school leaders.
A link to our summary and guidance of the SEND consultation is available below.
NASUWT has responded to consultations on Ofsted, accountability and will be responding on behalf of our members to the SEND consultation.
Providing a world class education for children and young people must be fully funded and should not further increase the workload of teachers and leaders in an already stretched system.
We are part of the Improving Education Together (IET) board alongside the DfE, unions and employers, focusing on the issues of SEND, accountability and workload.
NASUWT has taken part in guidance produced by the IET board, in consultation with Parentkind, advising parents to raise concerns with schools in the first instance rather than on social media or before referral to external agencies.
SEND reform
Matt Wrack, General Secretary, has raised concerns that the proposed funding for SEND reform will not be adequate;
“While increased early support for SEND is welcome, years of underfunding and diminished external services mean that this new funding is barely a drop in the bucket of the investment necessary to drive real improvement in schools. £1.6bn over three years may sound like a lot of money, but it equates to just a few thousand pounds per setting. It is absolutely ridiculous to suggest that SEND provision can be adequately overhauled with this low level of funding, or that the associated workloads for teachers could be in any way offset by throwing a bit of money in their general direction.”
Please see our summary and guidance on the SEND consultation on our SEND Consultation (England) page.
Mobile phones
We have lead the call for statutory restrictions on mobile phones in schools.
Our position statement is available on our Prohibiting the Use of Mobile Phones in Schools page.
What does the Schools White Paper mean for leaders?

Leadership Advisory Committee
Thanks to our Leadership Advisory Committee, whose role is to highlight issues specific to school leaders.
Members of the committee recently facilitated a discussion of middle and senior leaders at our national conference.
Attendees raised the need for greater access to NPQs for aspiring leaders wishing to take the next steps for career progression.
