No case for cuts to the TPS

Recent media reports have highlighted calls for public service pension reform on the grounds of ‘affordability’.

NASUWT is clear: there is no case for cuts to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) or wider public service pensions.

Teachers have already seen significant changes to their pensions.

In 2015, the Coalition Government imposed detrimental changes to the TPS which were sold as a ‘solution for a generation’.

As a result, teachers are:

  • paying more;

  • working longer; and

  • receiving less.

Further detrimental changes would be unjustified and would only worsen the recruitment and retention crisis in schools.

The TPS is a vital part of teachers’ total reward package, and undermining it would damage the profession and the education service.

NASUWT position

  • No detriment to the TPS or public service pensions.

  • The teachers’ pension age must not increase any further.

  • Secure, predictable pensions are essential to recruit, retain and value teachers.

  • The Government must keep its commitments and avoid destabilising the scheme ahead of the Autumn Statement.

NASUWT will oppose any attempt to weaken the TPS.
