October is Black History Month and has been celebrated across the UK for over 30 years, each year growing from strength to strength.

The aim of the month is to recognise significant contributions to society made by people with Black [*] heritage and how their history is integral to mainstream narratives.

During Black History Month the achievements of the Black community are highlighted and celebrated and the hidden history about Black communities is uncovered. A wide range of events are held throughout the UK.

Black History Month 2023 - ‘Saluting Our Sisters’ and #WeMatter

The theme Saluting our Sisters pays homage to Black women who had contributions ignored, ideas appropriated and voices silenced.

Development Course for Black Members

The NASUWT is delighted to announce a new Development Course for Black Members which has been written with the NASUWT Black Members Advisory Committee.

We are actively seeking to improve the participation of Black members in the running of the Union and specifically encouraging them to become Workplace Representatives and branch activists.

Our new development courses are designed to:

  • give a flavour of what it is like to be an NASUWT activist;

  • highlight the lay structure of the Union;

  • demonstrate the importance of organising;

  • identify barriers that exist for Black members; and

  • provide information on the various lay roles available to members.

The development courses have been specifically written for members who have no previous activism experience but want to become more involved in the democratic structures of the NASUWT.

* The NASUWT uses the term Black in a political and inclusive sense to describe those who self-identify as African, Caribbean and Asian identities and those with a common and direct history of racism, racist oppression and diminished opportunities in today’s society. This Consultation Conference aims to enable members to engage with the key issues and challenges facing the Union, share experiences, meet other members and shape the future of the Union.
