Responding to the announcement that the Scottish Government is to introduce in the Autumn term recording of incidents of pupil bullying, Chris Keates General Secretary of the NASUWT-The Teachers Union, said:

“This is a welcome development, as standardised recording is important to identify the scale and extent of the problem and to enable strategies to be developed to combat this unacceptable behaviour.  Bullying and harassment blights lives and must be strongly challenged.

“However, these measures do not go far enough.  Schools should be safe environments for pupils and staff and the NASUWT will therefore be pressing for this recording of incidents to be extended to incidents involving teachers.  We will also want to see measures to ensure the equality impact assessments of incidents to identify whether teachers and pupils with protected characteristics are disproportionately targeted by thus unacceptable behaviour.”
