The NASUWT welcomed the latest Secretary of State for Education to his new role. Damian Hinds MP took the helm at the Department for Education on 8 January, following the departure of Justine Greening MP.
At a pre-scheduled meeting of the DfE Programme of Talks held on 10 January, the NASUWT had an early opportunity to welcome Mr Hinds to his new role. The NASUWT took the opportunity to raise with the Secretary of State the continuing issues affecting teachers and the teaching profession and to highlight the damaging impact of the Government’s policies on teachers’ pay, pensions, jobs and workload and the deepening teacher recruitment and retention crisis.
The NASUWT is the only union that remains in a national trade dispute with the Government on these issues. The NASUWT General Secretary, Chris Keates, has written to the Secretary of State seeking an early meeting to discuss the deep concerns of NASUWT members.
