The NASUWT-The Teachers’ Union, has today presented its International Solidarity Award to Roberto Baradel at its Annual Conference in Belfast.
The award was presented to Mr Baradel in recognition of his commitment to fighting for the rights of teachers and for quality education in Buenos Aires and throughout Argentina.
Mr Baradel is the General Secretary of Buenos Aires branch of the CTERA teachers’ union. He has been subject to violence and death threats against himself and his family for his work standing up for the rights of teachers and students.
Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, said:
“Roberto is an inspiration to teachers and trade unionists across the world, through his courage to stand up for the human rights of teachers and students in the face of oppressive and harsh treatment.
“Despite the threats made against him and his family he has refused to be silenced in his fight for teachers in Argentina to be valued and recognised as skilled professionals and for free, quality public education.
“The NASUWT stands with Roberto Baradel and Argentina’s teachers in challenging the privatisation of education, and assaults on the rights of teachers and trade unions.
“The NASUWT congratulates Roberto for his fortitude, courage and leadership in ensuring that the rights of teachers and the entitlements of children and young people are recognised and respected.”
