Commenting on revisions issued by the DfE for schools on the use of supply teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Patrick Roach, General Secretary of the NASUWT-The Teachers’ Union, said:

“Following representations from the NASUWT highlighting the situation of hardworking and dedicated supply teachers, including a joint letter with trade bodies, the TUC and other TUC affiliates, the DfE has seen fit to publish revised advice and guidance for schools on the use of agency staff, including supply teachers.

“The guidance encourages schools to continue to make payments for supply teachers working through agencies who were on live assignments at 80% of the agreed rate and not therefore be placed on furlough.

“Whilst welcoming the publication of the long overdue advice and guidance and the support it may provide to those supply teachers working through agencies whose work was abruptly cancelled following the current lockdown, the NASUWT maintains that much more needs to be done by the DfE and the Government to ensure that all supply teachers, many of whom have been hardest hit since the imposition of further restrictions, can access urgent financial assistance.”
