Commenting on the statement today by the Deputy First Minister on the reopening of schools, Dr Patrick Roach, General Secretary of the NASUWT-The Teachers’ Union, said:

“Given that the Deputy First Minister has previously made clear that plans to reopen schools fully to all pupils are yet to be published it is not helpful to encourage speculation about what the safe return of pupils and staff will look like.

“It is also vital that all schools and colleges are given sufficient time to prepare for the full return of pupils once the Government’s plans are confirmed next week, bearing in mind that for the time being schools remain closed for the summer holidays.

“The Government and local authorities will need to take appropriate steps to ensure that every school has in place robust safety measures and procedures to minimise the risks of Covid-19 transmission which will be vital to securing the trust and confidence of parents and teachers.

“The safety of pupils and staff is and must remain of paramount importance.”
