The NASUWT had its first meeting with Paul Quinn, Newman Catholic Academy Trust’s (NCAT) Finance Director and Rosemary Brown on 2 June 2017. The meeting was positive, where the Union was able to agree in principle both a Trade Union Recognition Agreement (TURA) and a Trade Union Facility Time Agreement (TUFA).

In addition, the NASUWT has requested copies of existing pay policies in respect of Newman academies and is forwarding the NASUWT template to support the academies' monitoring of pay progression data. The Trust has given a commitment to working collaboratively with the NASUWT in harmonising policies.

The Trust has confirmed they will follow and comply with the School Teachers' Pay and Condition Document (STPCD). Future appointments will be made on STPCD terms.

The next meeting with Newman MAT has been provisionally agreed for July 2017 with the date to be confirmed.

NCAT has agreed to provide the NASUWT with copies of the current pay and appraisal policies in use at the Trust.

NCAT was established by the Portsmouth Catholic Diocese in July 2011. The Portsmouth Catholic Diocese has three other multi-academy trusts (MATs) which do not comply with the NASUWT terms of reference in qualifying as a national MAT.

The other MATs under the umbrella of the Portsmouth Diocese are:

  • Edith Stein Academies Trust
  • Frassati Academies Trust
  • Mother Teresa Catholic Academies Trust
