NASUWT comments on Diplomas study

Commenting on the survey released today by the Association of Colleges (AoC) into Diplomas, Chris Keates, General Secretary of the NASUWT, the largest teachers’ union, said:

“The research highlights the fact that over eight out of ten staff are positive about the Diplomas. The NASUWT has had similarly encouraging feedback from members about the quality of courses and the fact that students have found them engaging.

“In general, Diplomas offer the potential for high quality learning experiences for pupils in the 14-19 age range.

“The study echoes concerns the NASUWT has raised about the how functional skills are integrated into the Diplomas and the way in which the qualifications are designed and structured. It is critical that Diplomas are suitable for students of all abilities and that they prepare all learners thoroughly for the world of work.

“Care must be exercised before making any adverse judgements about funding of the Diplomas. The Learning and Skills Council is being abolished. The Machinery of Government reforms, which will introduce the Young People’s Learning Agency, will be tasked with ensuring Diplomas are funded effectively and efficiently.”
