Teachers have faced a mounting assault on their pay and conditions and their professionalism. Since 2010, current education policy has provoked a crisis in the profession. Teachers have been engaged in continuous action since 2011.

Teachers have faced a significant pay cut and there are also serious issues around excessive workload and job security. Despite a sympathetic hearing from Cabinet Secretary, Mike Russell, to the concerns of teachers, the dispute is far from being resolved.

Northern Ireland

Teachers in Northern Ireland have been engaged action to secure changes to pay and conditions of service since 2009. The NASUWT has been engaged in talks with the Education Minister John O’Dowd and work continues to resolve the dispute.
