The context of the research is the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 (RRAA) which places a new positive duty on schools, LEAs and other public bodies to promote race equality in service provision and among employees.

Previous research has highlighted racial discrimination as a barrier to the recruitment, retention and progression of teachers.

The NASUWT and other teacher unions have a key role to play in challenging racial injustice in education.
