NASUWT evidence to House of Commons Education and Skills Committee Inquiry into Assessment and Testing

The NASUWT's evidence to the House of Commons Children Schools and Families Select Committee Inquiry on testing and assessment is based on a recognition of the critical importance of the accountability regime on the statutory testing and assessment of pupils.  The Union maintains that assessment and testing of themselves are not responsible for the skewing of the curriculum and pressure on teachers and pupils with which they are often linked. The evidence sets out the NASUWT's view that it is the high-stakes nature of the way in which assessment data is used to hold schools to account that lies at the heart of these issues. Reform of the school accountability regime remains central to ensuring that testing and assessment support the work of teachers and headteachers in providing high quality learning experiences for all pupils.
