To the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families and ministers in
devolved nations
I strongly believe that those who are members of the BNP and other far-right
organisations should be banned from working as teachers.
This is currently the case in the police, armed forces and prison service.
If racists and fascists have no place in these services, they have no place
working in education. The NASUWT also believes they should not serve on governing
bodies.
Education is a public service and as such its ethos and values are those in
which harassment, discrimination, intolerance and abuse have no place, which
is at variance with the beliefs of the BNP.
Governors and teachers should operate within the values and ethos of public
services and have a duty to protect children, young people and staff from harassment,
discrimination, intolerance and abuse. Their role is to contribute to securing
an inclusive society, promoting community cohesion and achieving social justice
for all.
Children and young people should be protected from the roles of those in education
being used to provide a cloak of respectability for those who subscribe to
the BNP’s vile agenda.
