Retired Members - Carer Support
The Federation of Retired Members’ Associations is aware that many of its members are also carers, both working and retired. You may be responsible for a spouse or partner, an elder or younger relative, or even a friend or neighbour. Most people become carers (or recipients of care) at some stage in their lives. This causes stress, anxiety and feelings of isolation. Your commitment may also gradually increase without you noticing until it is impossible to fulfil. At this stage you may be unaware that professional help is available; nor may you have the time or energy to look for it.
A FRMA Carers’ Support Committee was set up in 2003 which produced a Carers’ Directory containing useful contact details of organizations offering help for carers. The Directory was launched by the NASUWT President in 2005 and made available via the NASUWT website and regional offices, as well as by the FRMA and local RMAs. Your local RMA may have a designated Carers’ Contact person on its committee. Articles are published regularly in Format on behalf of Carers. The Directory was also updated in 2007.
The FRMA Carers’ Directory was discontinued in 2011 and removed from the NASUWT website when 2 excellent alternative sources of information became available giving contact details of the organizations providing expert help and advice for Carers – NHS Direct and Age UK.
You would also be strongly advised to contact a local branch of Carers UK at an early stage; one of their services is to undertake an independent assessment of your needs as a Carer.
It must be stressed, however, that NASUWT members, either individually or collectively, cannot offer advice. That must be left to the experts.
