Peter Banks, NQT chemistry teacher

Purcell School, Bushey

Peter BanksWhy did you get involved in teaching?

It is something I always wanted to do. I love my subject, I love mucking about with chemicals in class. I enjoy seeing the kids grow up and seeing them mature into hopefully more responsible young adults.

What do you like most about teaching?

Everything. Seeing them grow into young men and women is one of the most rewarding things. What is there to not like about teaching? I get to go on trips all around the world and do lots of outdoor activities.

I enjoy my subject its what I have spent five years training to get where I am now. I love the thrill of going to work.

Why did you join the NASUWT?

I joined the NASUWT because at university someone came up to me and thrust a bag into my hand. But the NQT courses that were held were absolutely fantastic.

Those courses were absolutely fantastic and very enjoyable and they formed a big part of my decision to join.

What challenges have you faced as a new teacher?

The biggest challenges have been remembering the names of the pupils, I struggle with that. It can also be difficult to come up with something that is exciting every lesson.

But I have had a lot of support from the other staff and I have survived so far!
