Stress tool for line managers

New guidance has been launched to assist line managers in supporting the wellbeing of their staff.

In recognition of the vital role line managers should play in the identification and management of stress within an organisation, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a new tool to allow managers to reflect on their contribution to reducing and preventing stress in their workplace.

Line Managers are likely to see the problems which may be causing stress at first hand, are well placed to notice changes in staff behaviour that may indicate a stress-related problem and will often be the first point of contact when an individual feels stressed.

The tool aims to help equip managers with the correct skills and behaviours to be able to manage workplace stress and employee wellbeing.

The Line Manager Competency Indicator Tool is available on the HSE website at www.hse.gov.uk/stress/mcit.htm?ebul=hsegen/19-apr-2010&cr=14 (new window)

The NASUWT has also developed a self assessment diagnostic tool for members to check their wellbeing at work. This can be found at www.nasuwt.org.uk/InformationandAdvice/HealthSafetyandWelfare/TeacherWellbeingSurvey/index
